Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

BE PREPARED !

Hurricane season began June 1 and continues through Nov. 30. Be sure to practice hurricane preparedness and learn about hurricane safety and survival. Thank you Gail Treglia, Code Compliance Officer, with The Town of Carolina Shores for the excellent presentation on June 15 and June 22 about hurricane preparedness. I'm sure all who attended gained valuable information. You can visit Brunswick County online for additional information.

On average, six Atlantic hurricanes develop each year. When a hurricane moves toward coastal areas it often causes severe damage. Strong winds create storm surges, floods, rip tides and can even spawn tornadoes. As the hurricane moves forward, its right front quadrant is typically where the most devastation occurs.

REMINDER: Brunswick County uses "Code RED" to send reverse 911 notifications by phone to cell phone or home phone, text message, email or TDD/TTY device. To register or update your information, visit https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/codered/

I came across this story and want to share it with you.

I was riding a bike and noticed a man in front of me, traveling at a slower pace.  I decided to pass him, so I started cycling faster and faster every block.  I was gaining on him and finally passed him.  I felt like a winner but he had no clue we were in a race! Then I realized that I had missed my street and traveled nearly six blocks too far.

Isn't that what happens in life, we spend most of our time in competition and miss our own path to our destines.

Moral of the story:

Unhealthy competition is a continuous process, a never ending cycle, a race of life.  No matter what you do, someone will always be ahead of you, someone with a better job, a better car or  more wealth.

Feel grateful for what life has offered you!  Stay focused on your path and live a healthy life.  There is no competition in destiny.  Run your own race of life and wish others well!

Adapted, Arthur Unknown

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

This month the ACC would like to remind everyone that ALL complaints any homeowner would like to address need to be submitted on the CSPOA form “REQUEST FOR INSPECTION” and needs to be signed. Complainant information is confidential. This form and ALL the forms and requests for permits are at the CSPOA Office at 17 Lakeview Court and available online at the website www.carolinashorespoa.org . REMEMBER Permits do not cost anything! Please ask for one. These permits help keep our neighborhood as beautiful as we all like to see our homes look.

The ACC committee has noticed there are a few driveway headwalls that are damaged or broken. We want to ask homeowners to please fill out an ALTERATION PERMIT FORM. Repairs to these headwalls are usually inexpensive. In an effort to help, here are some Masonry contractors to call: Travis Wilson at 843-458-3691. Also, Jeff Montgomery at 843-458-3691. These contractors left their business cards with the POA office. We do not recommend any contractors. We recommend you check out any contractor with the Better Business Bureau, before entering into a contract with them and before you pay in advance of work being done. Remember, ALL Reputable contractors will do the work you need done, without money in advance.

Joe’s side bar: “Please help me to help You” Everyone of us needs to help each other! This way we can keep our landscaping looking good and healthy. Keeping lawns and shrubs watered and fertilized, as well as new plantings, will go a long way in keeping your home looking as BEAUTIFUL AS YOU WANT. July and August are the times to let your grass grow a little taller to around three (3) inches, this will help your lawn make it through the VERY HOT DAYS of summer. ALSO, please keep your lawn cut to keep the grass healthy and prevent weed growth. We recommend keeping lawns at no higher than four (4) inches. NOTE if your lawn grows to six (6) inches you will receive a notice that it needs to be cut. If you cannot care for you lawn/shrubs, I suggest you ask your neighbors to help for a short period of time. Please do the neighborly thing! If necessary, call the CSPOA office and we can assist you to locate a LAWN CARE COMPANY to help you.

JOE’S SAYING: “HELP ME HELP YOU.”

Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson

THE COURTS

On July 2 our tennis courts will begin getting their much-awaited face lift. The courts will be closed beginning July 1 and reopen approximately July 15. Equipment and supplies will begin arriving on June 30 and will be placed along the courts and be there for a few days. NO PARKING will be allowed on the grass by the courts. You will be asked to move your cars if you park there. Also, the bleachers will be getting a new coat of paint at this time.

THE POOL

We ask all members and guests coming to the pool to please not park on the grass unless there are no parking spaces available in the lot. We know there are not many spaces so when the need for parking on the grass occurs, we are asking for all cars to be parked on the grass along the roadside, opposite to the tennis courts. Cars parked on the courts side will be asked to be moved.

Please remember when signing into the pool to print your Last Name and Carolina Shores address where required. Also, print the number of guests and total number in your party. Please print legibly so attendants can read your information. As summer becomes hotter, more people are coming to the pool to get away from it all, enjoying other people’s company or just wanting to cool off, we tend to become more relaxed and not pay attention to the rules. We only have a few rules, and we ask that you follow them, not only signing in but also once you are in the pool area.

We have many new members moving into our community so please familiarize yourselves with our rules. If you are not a property owner, please do not sign in under owner. Please remember, renters are not owner/members but considered guests of the property owner and cannot make requests for new or replacement fobs. Renters cannot be verified so you will have to contact the homeowner/member to make arrangements with our POA office to get a fob. Members coming to the pool without a working fob will be asked for address information and possibly ID before being allowed into the pool area. Once verified, you will be admitted and asked to go to the office where they can adjust or replace the non-working fob for future entry.

As always, all guests must be accompanied with a member to be allowed admittance into the pool area and must be signed in with the member. This year we have many more toddlers visiting the pool. Parents, please make sure when using flotation devises the only ones allowed in the pool are the recommended vest with arm floats (all 1 pc) and full vests. (These are pictured in the June bulletin.) Inflatable wings are not allowed in the pool at any time as they are not certified. If you are asked to remove your child for this reason, please remember our attendants are following the rules set and it is mainly for the safety of all the children. Also, non-swimmers are not allowed past the safety rope at any time. Please remember that our attendants are not lifeguards. As we begin a new swimming season, we hope everyone has an enjoyable time.

Recreation Committee – Mary Ann Williams

A group of people sitting in chairs

Description automatically generated with medium confidenceMany, many thanks to all who attended and/or helped at the annual POA Memorial Day weekend picnic. The food was delicious, and the weather was perfect!

As a side note, 38 people out of the 300 who had tickets did not attend. Please be aware that “no shows” cost our community, in this case, over $400.00. Plus, we did have late requests for tickets. Those requests, however, could not be fulfilled since the number had to be called in to the caterer 10 days in advance. Just a thoughtful reminder for future events.

Don’t forget the Ice Cream Social on the Fourth of July from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the pavilion. Enjoy a cool serving of chocolate or vanilla ice cream, complete with your favorite toppings. Just let the POA office (910) 579-2044 know that you will be attending so we can get an estimate of the amount of ice cream to order.

Despite the heat, over 60 residents attended June’s “Happy Hour in the Park”!  We all kept cool under the pavilion’s circulating fans! The dates for future “Happy Hour in the Park” are: July 15, August 19, September 16, and October 21 (a very special end of season event complete with a DJ!) All are held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on the 3rd Friday of the month at the POA pavilion near the pool.

A new event this year will be “Bring Your Own Picnic” to be held on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. We will be cooking the hot dogs and hamburgers and providing the condiments, and you bring your own picnic salads, sides and desserts for you and your family. More details to follow.

Also, watch for details about our upcoming Oktoberfest to be held on Sunday, October 9.

Save the Dates:

Happy Hour in the Park - Friday, July 15 - this is an ongoing event and happens the third Friday of every month from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion by the pool. Join your friends and neighbors at this very informal gathering. BYOB and any food/snacks you wish.

Ice Cream Social - Monday, July 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the pavilion. Cool off with a frozen treat! Watch your email for additional details.

Oktoberfest - Sunday, October 9, at 3:00 p.m. at the pavilion. Details to follow in a future bulletin.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe theme for this month’s Book Discussion Group was “Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award Winners.” Each of us read and reported on a book that has won one of the prizes in the last ten years. Books presented were The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich, The Overstory by Richard Powers, Hell of a Book by Jason Mott, The Round House by Louise Erdrich, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond, Trust Exercise by Susan Choi, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer.  We enjoyed discussing these books and learned more about the Pulitzer Prize and The National Book Award but concluded that literary award winners aren’t always particularly appealing to the general reading public.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, July 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA clubhouse. Our two reading selections for the month are The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel and/or House Rules by Jodi Picoult. We welcome all Carolina Shores residents who like to read and talk about books!

Pickleball - Rick Griffith & Sue Berger

It's gotten pretty hot, so we've adjusted our summer hours. The "Open Play" schedule is as follows:

Tuesday 8:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Thursday 8:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Saturday 8:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

All levels of players from beginners to advanced are welcome to join us.

We continue to wait for our new pickleball courts to get started and completed. We have continued to get delayed and re-scheduled by the contractor. We'll adjust our schedule once the contractor starts work. In the meantime, we'll go with this schedule.

*Carolina Shores "Open Play" pickleball is for players of ALL levels of experience including beginners. It is NOT a league or team competition. It is recreational as well as social. Beginners are encouraged to learn and play.

Wear Tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Paddles and balls are available to use.

Never played and interested in learning? We'll teach you. Check out this site on how to play: How to Play Pickleball - USA Pickleball or go to (www. USAPickleball.org). Stop by the courts during Open play and check it out.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
